To Repair or Replace?
How often do we discard consumer electronics
because it is less expensive to replace than
to repair? More than we like to admit. So
here is a suggestion. That
more-than-one-year-old printer may still be
under a warranty that you have overlooked, or
never knew about in the first place.
Many consumer credit cards have a warranty-doubling benefit when the card is used to purchase consumer electronics. It's a little-known feature, but it can mean the difference between repairing a 1-2 year-old item and keeping it in service vs discarding and replacing it. For details, check the web site for your credit card company, or look at the fine print on the terms and conditions paperwork that came with the card. And of course, you'll need the proof-of-purchase documents should you decide to take advantage of this benefit. |

We've got answers!
Q:Our newer Hewlett-Packard laser
printers have a toner-saving feature called
"Economode." Is it o.k. to leave the printer
on this setting all the time? Seems like a
good way to make the toner cartridges last
longer.
A:The short answer is "no." Economode is great for draft documents and occasional use, but a toner cartridge is more than toner. It is a pretty sophisticated assembly of rollers, blades, drums, gears and 30-40 other parts. Under normal, non-Economode use, the toner will run out before the other components wear out. If Economode is turned on all the time, the cartridge may eventually fail before all the toner is spent-not a good thing. If you are trying to reduce your toner expense, you might try a quality remanufactured product from a vendor with a good service reputation and return policy. |
