HP LaserJet 4, 5
The LaserJet 4 and 5 are proven workhorses in the business arena, but they're not without their problems. So here are some frequent concerns and problems about this series and our recommendations for handling them.
Labels Jam
Problem: Labels frequently jam inside the printer.
Solution: For starters, when printing labels, you should use only the MP (multipurpose) paper tray. Using the PC (lower) paper tray significantly increases the chance of a paper jam because the paper from that tray moves along a serpentine path that tends to loosen the edges of the labels from their backing, causing them to come off and stick to the inside of the printer. The result can be a costly repair. Using the MP tray sends the label sheet along a shorter, straighter path, making it less likely that labels will peel inside the printer. By the way, the MP tray is also recommended when printing on heavy stock, transparencies, and envelopes.
Paper Jams
Problem: The paper jams as it exits the printer, folding like an accordion.
Solution: You probably have a defective or worn paper delivery assembly. Just cleaning the delivery roller will not address the problem. The roller and four roller holders must be replaced.
Ghost Images From Previous Page
Problem: Images and text from a previously printed page keep appearing in the background of printouts.
Solution: The fusing assembly is the likely culprit. The heated fuser roller is probably worn and has a buildup of toner on the surface. This toner leaves an image on the pages as they pass through the fusing assembly. Cleaning the roller will usually only result in a temporary relief from the "ghosting" problem. We recommend replacement of the roller.
