HP LaserJet 4000, 4050, 4100

Included below is the solution to a few common problems associated with this series of HP LaserJet printers. Please give us a call if you need further assistance. We are happy to answer your questions.

Printer Grabs More Than One Sheet from Tray 1

Problem: My printer routinely pulls several sheets of paper at a time from the top fold-down tray, usually resulting in a jam.

Solution: Several things could account for what are called “multi-pick” errors. First, make sure that the paper stock is not the problem. Paper with a nicked or crinkled leading edge will often result in a multi-pick error. Make sure that the paper in the paper slot is in good condition, or replace it with fresh paper from a different box or ream.

Make sure the paper tray is not over-filled.

Finally, these printers have several sets of pads and rollers that act to prevent multiple pages from feeding at one time. The pads in your printer may be worn and need to be replaced. Contact us, this one is usually a quick and inexpensive repair.

Printer Makes a Loud Thumping Sound When Feeding Paper

Problem: The printer "thumps" when feeding paper from Tray 2 or 3. It also seems to jam more frequently.

Solution: The feed/separation rollers and pickup rollers for those trays are probably worn. The noise results from the rollers scuffing the paper rather than crisply picking the page and moving it into the registration area of the printer. A higher rate of paper jams also accompanies the presence of worn rollers. Replacement is quick and inexpensive.

Ghost Images From Previous Page

Problem: Images and text from a previously printed page keep appearing in the background of printouts.

Solution: The fusing assembly is the likely culprit. The heated fuser roller film is probably worn and has a buildup of toner on the surface. This toner leaves an image on the pages as they pass through the fusing assembly. Cleaning the roller will usually only result in a temporary relief from the "ghosting" problem. We recommend replacement of the roller film assembly.
