Black Flakes On Pages

Problem: I keep finding black flakes on the printed pages. I can scratch them off with my fingernail, but how do I stop them from printing?

Solution: The newer Hewlett-Packard printers, such as the 4L, 4P, 5P, 6P, 4000, 5000, and 8000 series use an "Instant On" fusing technology to melt the toner image and fuse it to the paper. The upside to this technology is less heat given off into your office area by the fusing assembly and a much faster warm-up time. To keep the fuser clean, however, you need to run a cleaning page through the printer every time you change a toner cartridge, or as needed to keep the flakes away. The HP 4000, 5000, and 8000 will generate their own cleaning page. Here's how:

  1. Press the "Menu" button until you see"Print Quality Menu" in the display window.
  2. Press the "Item" button until you see"Create Cleaning Page" in the display.
  3. Press the "Select" button. A page will print.
  4. Follow the instructions on the printed page.
  5. Repeat this process until the flakes disappear

Create Cleaning Page

You'll need to create your own cleaning page for the 4L, 4P, 5P and 6P printers. Here's how:

  1. Use any software application that will allow you to create and print a large black rectangle. Make the rectangle the full width of the paper and 3-4 inches in length down the page.
  2. Print the page.
  3. Place the printed page face down in the upper paper tray and print the image again, making sure that the printer feeds the paper from the upper tray.
  4. .Repeat this process until the flakes disappear.
